AEDM Project 2 Am I Worthy

AEDM Project 2
"Am I Worthy"

Hello friends..it's Sunday and a bit cold outside. The leaves are dancing around the yard carefree and congregating in places that I should be taking care of right now, but here I am warm and cozy inside hibernating on this fall morning. I will be out soon enough, taking care of my chores that I've been putting off all week.  One of these days I will have a full time yard boy:)

For yesterdays project I worked on a portrait on grey toned paper by Strathmore which I love. I've been using it quite frequently as you can build up the tones quicker and the face doesn't look as harsh as when you are sketching on white paper.

Normally I use a reference photo from a magazine and just change the pictures up. I avoid anyone who is smiling with their pearly whites showing at all costs.LOL   I haven't graduated to drawing teeth just yet. Or bodies for that matter.
I do love me some eyes though.
Lips are my next favorite.

I've even come to love and respect hair.  We often rush when it comes to drawing hair, or at least I used to.   Now I enjoy seeing it build up and come to life. I've learned some very valuable tricks along the way and am sure I will continue to learn the more I practice.
The more and more I glazed on the layers of pencil and charcoal, I thought that my girl looked a bit sad. Almost teary eyed.  She was not feeling strong or confidant, questioning herself in many ways.
It's funny how our own emotions can come out in our art even if that wasn't what we intended at first.
I finished off with building depth around the girl by doing some freestyle writing and even scribbles. It's  a good way to get your feelings out and it also gives the background an edgy look.
Am I Worthy.
I know I am, but it doesn't always feel that way..and so I art:)

Hope you have a wonderful Sunday, stay warm and make time for YOU.

Artfully Yours,

Jodi

An Art Hoarder? Or Does She Have Potential??

This weekend I spent the majority of it focusing--really focusing on finishing a few of my pieces that I have going to try to get them done before the holidays. You'd think I'm preparing for a show with all the work I have in my studio right now, I mean it is jam packed full of art and a ton of art supplies that I bought at the Art of the Carolina's a few weeks back.
I fear I'm an art hoarder..lol.    I swore I would not buy any more supplies for months until I used up a good portion of what I had (which in reality would take me years..haha). And then what did I do?  I found myself at Michael's for their 5 hours sale last night.  I must be stopped.  All I needed to do was to buy some hanging supplies for this piece and the other big pieces I have going and I walked out 90 dollars poorer.
It's addictive.  Supplies for whatever you are into are addictive, aren't they? It might be shoes for one person, clothes for another, fabric or yarn for another.  Mine addiction is for paint, drawing accessories, and other mixed media fun stuff.  I can tell myself I'm just going to buy a couple of things and then I get allured by the POTENTIAL that all of the cool doo dads and thingamagigs that call my name everytime I walk through the doors.
I promise you though, this is it. I'm not buying anything else until I've sold double what I spent in the last month.  Umm....that's a lot just so you know so I hope someone buys some big things from me or I might have to go to rehab :) Spread the word..lol

Or, maybe I can bargain with myself that for every painting or thingamagig I finish, I can treat myself to something new??: Nahhh....I better go with the sold deal otherwise I might bury myself in a sea of paint, canvases and other myriad of supplies that I'm surrounded by in my studio.  I did finish this 24 x 30 painting though...just incase someone is interested and wants to support my habit (art supply purchase habit that is...haha).    "It's Going To Be A Good Day"....It's 99% attitude, 1% circumstance (I like to make stats up to prove my point!) This however, is true.  Just look at the painting and you can see that there is sweetness and whimsy wherever you look. It's hard not to have a good day when you are smiling!

Art Everyday Month!

If you have been waiting for challenge to start that really captures the essence of your own creative spirit, wait no more. Join in Leah's challenge to create art everyday for an entire month. Perhaps your art is sewing, cooking, drawing, painting, crochet, knitting, polymer clay, writing, journaling--whatever it is that floats your creative boat, think about joining in this great challenge which will spur your creative spirit on in a community like setting. It would be great if you could document your journey along the way as well, but there is no pressure here. Just do what you can and enjoy the process. You may learn something about yourself, others, or perhaps discover a new technique. You will surely grow because of this initiative! Leah has set up a blog page dedicated to AEDM--check it in the link below.
November is Art Everyday Month There's also a flicker page to join if you want to share your WIP or completed projects during the challenge:

Thank you Leah for encouraging the creative spirit in so many!

First and foremost, thank you to everyone who stopped by to send their best wishes and congrats in my last post!!! What a thrill to read so many encouraging and supportive comments! I have really enjoyed sharing this whole experience with my family, friends, and blog readers (who so many I consider my extended family and friends). It does inspire me to do more and more!
For my AED entry for the last two days, I spent cooking up some more inspirational magnets. I have these set aside to go into my B&M stores that I am in downtown. Don't let these little buggers fool you--this is about a weeks worth of work to make them come together!! I need to experiment with a more efficient way of doing them without comprising the details that go into them. Not sure how to create them any faster than I do considering I have to let them dry between the several layers of coats of this that or the other thing I put on them. Maybe I need an art fairy to help me..lol.
For myself, I am going to approach this creative month with goals to acheive by month's end. I work better when I have direction. Not that I stick to it exactly, but having something to work towards gives me motivation.

Okay so here goes my November goals and to do list:

1) Finish up my red and blue collection Ive been working on (total pieces-8)
2) Start working on the next grouping of Winter in NY part 2 (I've had a lot of good feedback on this collection so I want to explore the color combination further). Total pieces 10
3) Start on what will be an ongoing project--creating 1 large work each month for the next 12 months
4) List all my new prints that I have here that have been waiting patiently for me to get my act together.

(My lil bloody boy this Halloween)
5) Work on my ATC for the Art of The Carolina's--absolute due date, November 12 th. Pieces needed-40
6) Work on my next article for group project
7) Start new piece for my next submission for a summer piece
8) Start a business account
9) Buy more canvases and more good paint at the vendor trade show next week
10) Update my price list for 2009 (I am revisiting my pricing and will be developing a formula that better fits into what the actual costs are, time involved, and make room for some profit)

(eek gads...who is that? what a sight!)

11) Order a new set of prints (I must list the first set though before I do that)

12) Work on my next group of magnets that I will put in my shop (goal is to make 100)
13) Work on 2 custom orders pending
14) Buy a journal book and sign up for Pam's class next January

(jason was patrolling the haunted Halloween garage)
15) Blog more often about my wip, ramblings, etc. I've been managing about 2x a week..I'd like to do a few more posts a week but not neccesarily long ones. All your inspiring comments and feedback definitely keep my spirits up and encourages me to create more and more!

((awww my real lil pumpkin) what a cutie patootie! I'm not sure what happened to the pumpkin itself, perhaps mumps-chicken pox?? Acne??? All the above?

Well that's it for me. As you can see, I have a big month planned, I hope I can do it all. We'll let you know come December 1st how it went!

*****

Even if it is only for this month, find a reason why you CAN do something, rather than a reason why you can't. Let the river flow you to the sea and believe it CAN be done.
Give yourself permission to be all that is inside of you!

Mini Pieces of My Heart and Other Ramblings

Mini Pieces of Happiness.

That's what I spent tonight creating. Many of them. They'll eventually be a part of a bigger piece , which I think is going to be adorable when done. I enjoyed working on these small pieces inspired by the cover artwork from the Jan/Feb issue of Cloth Paper Scissors, featuring Karen Michael. I'm trying to be good and finish up my project ahead of schedule but I REALLY wish I was soooo good at what I do, that I'd actually finish projects to coordinate with the holidays ahead of schedule so I can sell them. I don't know how designers work a couple of seasons ahead of time. I have never been one to decorate for all seasons (at least not to the nines) either. I am, at best, a couple weeks ahead of time ready for the holiday. I probably will never change, but I hope to get more in the mindset of holiday decorating and creating over this next year. Perhaps with the Creative Everyday challenge I'll be more focussed and stay on track with my projects. These mini heart collages are made on wood, which I painted black. I then collaged on assorted decorative papers and then cut out hearts and used gel medium to adhere on. I used black paint and did a wash on the pieces to age them and create a smoky effect, and finished painted on little doodles & adding inspirational word on each. They actually would make cute magnets as well...hmmm.....not a bad idea not that I think about it! Stay tuned!

Hope everyone had a great weekend (to me it's kinda like Sunday night as I had today off as well). Here's something that I saw while in Myrtle Beach this weekend. Pretty cool, huh?!

Have you met my Sweet Goodness 'Hanging Heart' Swap partner yet?? Please check out Connie's fabulous home and cottage she rents out to vacationers. She has such great taste and is the sweetest person. Her new blog can be found here!

If you are in need of inspiration or a cool one of a kind gift for the holiday of love (cough cough), check out Etsy's Valentine's Day gift guide! Fabulous assortment of goodies to be found! I'm only being sarcastic because I will be loveless this holiday...heck even when I was what's his face, it's not like I could expect any sort of LOVEly surprise. It was about this time last year when all heck broke loose. Anyway...maybe I'll peruse the gift guide and give myself a gift of love...LOL.

Check out this Christmas Journal By Dawn B. (she has a journal book coming out late this spring). Her blog is always full of inspiration and guidance for those who like to journal. I love her style and her handwriting is too die for. I WISH I had cool handwriting!! For beginning journalers, she is putting together a project that may get you published--check it out if you are so inclined!

Well, that's enough of my rambling for one day. Hope your week is artfully good!

Create in 2008

There's a lot to be said when you talk about creativity. Opening yourself up to your inner muse is liberating, frightening, and sometimes even surprising. Throughout this year, thanks to the many many magazines I've perused focusing on mixed media, the countless artist that feature their work online and I've been fortunate to 'find', the flickr groups I've visited, and art books I've purchased or been given, I feel like I've just jumped off a cliff but instead of falling down, I'm flying upwards into a great big world of the unknown with all the inspiration I've happened upon. As one does, in blogland, I 'happened' to come across through a friend of a friend, this challenge:

Check out my link on the sidebar for Leah's challenge. Last year she featured Art Everyday Month which pretty much turned out to an ongoing challenge to create something every day. Even if it's a doodle. And it doesn't even have to be art it can be a creative endeavor of other sorts. Hmmmm. Can I do it everyday? Probably not to a huge extent everyday, but surely I can do something, ANYTHING, daily, no matter how big or small. Can I blog it everyday. Heck no! LOL 2 or 3 times a week is all I can muster. But what the heck. I have tried to stay focussed over the last several months on creating but perhaps in 2008 I should focus on refining my skills and developing my own style. Maybe I have a style and just don't know it. Perhaps it's emerging. Should I work in collections? What should my focus be if I were to work in a collection. Are collections plotted out, or do they just begin to take form as time goes on? What are my own personal symbols that reappear throughout my work? Do I have any?? What do they really mean if I do incorporate symbols in my work?
Questions without answers.
Canvases with no paint.
Supplies that want a voice.
Brushes that want to be dancers.
In 2008, I will create.

I've had this canvas for a while now but I've been afraid to use it. Have you ever felt that way about one of your treasured stash? Was it that beautiful yard of coveted material? Or the softest yarn you've ever laid eyes on? Perhaps you've just hoarded those buttons for years waiting for the perfect project to use them on. Whatever your reason for holding your stash in reverence, I understand you. Once you start using it, it's purity is gone. There's a chance it may be stained in imperfection, but there's also a greater chance that it will become so much more...what it was meant to be all along. Sometimes you know in the beginning what the end will be, but more than not, you find out along the way as you embark on the creative journey what the voices in your head are really saying. In my head I sometimes think ahead to the next great thing I could be doing as I work on my piece in hand. If I'm not careful, I'll leave whats in hand for what's in my head...perhaps out of fear of finishing. More than not, it's because I am afraid of not being able to translate my vision into reality so rather than admit failure, I move on to the next project. Here we have the beginning of a vision. But I really don't know the end...I just have the concept of what I want to convey.

As most of you know, the concept and vision sometimes change along the way based on what mood the paint brush is in that day, or the humidity, or the artist, or the supplies you have available. It's best not to be too attached to your original vision because more than not, the canvas has a mind of it's own.
In mixed media, there are a lot of layers. Sometimes it's hard to move past the layer you are on because you love it too much. How do you achieve the many layers? For me it depends on the day. For this piece, it started out with a credit card and some paint. Then I added on the illusion of texture by brayering on this wallpaper to the canvas. I like to work light to dark, then light back to dark, if that makes sense.

This lovely wallpaper was given to me by my SGS sister Jane. Her packages always included some items to use in my art work. The texture on this paper is wonderful for mixed media painting, and I'm so greatful she shared some of her stash with me!

I know I'm going for a garden theme at sunset, but at this point, it's undecided how I'm going to get there. I will wait and let it speak to me some more.
I've taken over the Christmas Eve buffet table I borrowed. I don't think I'm giving it back to it's owner...LOL. It's my new LONG craft table. But I digress.... In this stage you can see the subtle stamping taking place and the grass starting to form.

You'll have to excuse the dark pictures....our days lately in NC have been cold and gray. I'm not complaining..just making excuses ;)
As I move farther along in my creation, I start to incorporate various papers, tissues, and collage on wording or music. My abstract flowers are starting to bloom, I can feel it.

The garden is stating to have a voice. In this picture, it looks busier than it's going to end up...but its all about the layers....we cover and conceal what's really underneath. There's a lot more than meets the eye to this piece.

A door is opening. It's taking shape. Open to the possibilities. Open to the unknown. And although she's not finished yet, I wanted to share this as part of the Creative Everyday challenge because in 2008, I am resolved to keep the creative door open and flowing. My end result may not be what I intended, perhaps it may be even more than I imagine, the point is, that I will be further along on my journey than if I never opened the door at all.

What are you opening yourself up to lately?
