Featured in Cloth Paper Scissors! Special Giveaway!

https://www.etsy.com/shop/JodiOhl
This is probably the  closest I will come to having my name up in lights, and guess what..I'll take it! I wanted to share a little peek at my work featured in this month's issue of Cloth Paper Scissors "Graffiti Doodle Houses" and give you a fun opportunity to win a signed copy and one of the pieces
featured in the article!
I'm beyond thrilled at how the article turned out, my pieces were showcased so nicely and it's always fun to see your name in print!!!
"The Small Things"   (You can win this piece pictured above!)

https://www.etsy.com/shop/JodiOhl
All of these pieces were completed on wood, recycled wood that I actually, believe it or not, cut myself! Even the shaped houses!  I'm lucky to have a good friend  *Mary N. of " Mary's Funky Fish"
who, bless her heart, is teaching me how to use power tools.  Kind of a scary thought, truthfully. I have to say though it's empowering to do things you have always had other people do for you or relied on others to get done.  I want to do more of those type of things in 2014..not necessarily just cutting my own wood..but learning how to do all sorts of tasks that I previously washed my hands of or never attempted.   I think that in doing so, it can help build confidence.

https://www.etsy.com/shop/JodiOhl
I've been working on this series of fun graffiti doodle style houses for awhile now, probably about 2 years and yet I still find that I get such a thrill out of designing fun make believe little worlds or villages.

I love the thought of finding a happy place where you feel comfortable, wanted, and amongst friends.  That true sense of community where life is good and fun.   Yes..in a lot of ways, I have found that place of my own...in a lot of ways, I'm still searching for all the components to truly make it ideal. Until it all comes together, I will continue to build these colorful villages and hopefully they will transport both myself and those that will come to own them,  into world that first and foremost, makes you smile.

I'd love for you to have one of these pieces and a signed copy of the magazine, so let's get this giveaway started!

How to enter?  Simply leave me a comment and tell me one place you like to go to that brings a smile to your face, perhaps it's a pizza place that you and your friends gather every Friday night. Maybe it's the boardwalk street down at your favorite beach or the once a year fair that comes to your town every July.    Little pockets of memories that bring you joy...that's where the story of our lives reside.

Enter to win today through Friday! Winner will be chosen this Saturday, January 18th, 2014.

:)  Jodi

Hi Jodi. The place that makes me most comfortable is my girlfriend's house in Southwest Harbor ME on Mt Desert Island Near Acadia National Park. She has known me since I was about six months old. She has known my parents and grandmother and both my husbands. She applauds my effort in art but is not critical of life's choices.

That's easy! Quaint ocean towns of my past. Whether it's Scituate Harbor, Mass., Humarock, Mass. or way, way, up in Port Clyde, Round Pond, New Harbor or Tenants Harbor, Maine. There's nothing like a living, breathing, oceanside town. Preferably one with sail masts clanking, fishing boats unloading and seagulls swooping.

Hi Jodi - congrats on getting your name in LIGHTS!!! That is awesome! I would go back to this farm my dad had - it was a great place for me and my siblings to spend time together as "grown ups" playing games, singing songs by the campfire, eating fabulous meals prepared mostly by my wonderful mother, sleeping 8 - 10 of us in one big room - so many memories of those times.

Anywhere I can be on the water in my kayak is my favorite place! I would love to win the painting.

Congrats on the great feature! My beautiful place is here in England on the south-western tip. A stunning little beach accessible only by a path down the cliffs, The bright blue Atlantic ocean pounding the shore with the surfers showing off their skills. Huge boulders and rock pools to explore. And peace. This place makes me smile to myself, and breathe and fully relax like no other place can. :)

Congratulations on your recent CPS article. I just received my issue today and was pleased that it was one of the better issues they have put out in a while.;

I am happiest when spending time with my daughter and her family. They love the outdoors as do I and we enjoy hiking, kayaking and exploring the places we visit. Those times are especially meaningful to me because we lost our 26 year old son 8 years ago to a fire. There's no replacing him, but having them in my life has saved mine.

It is so exciting to see a feature in a magazine by an artist that you are familiar with ~ I've taken one of your classes. Loved the article and love the art!!!
I live in Virginia now, but when I visit the little city in Ohio where I grew up, it makes me smile to visit the street I lived on. The houses, that seemed so big back then, are all so small. But it was a great loving neighborhood and I hold many happy memories of time living there.

These are beautiful! I grew up in San Diego and now live on the east coast. On my rare chances to visit my old hometown, I find that something just feels "right" when I step off the plane. I don't know if it's the quality of light, or the terrain, or something in the air, but I breathe easier. Hmmm... I think I'm due for a trip!

Debbi Scheibel-Hegarty said...

There is this wonderful place in Ware town NJ that is my therapeutic retreat. It is Green Acres Barn, an antiques/consignment mecca! Connie, the owner, converted her barn into a two story haven of wonderful treasures. Every room or section is chock-ful of unique, old and some new items just bursting with charm and maybe a little "push" to be creative. How many times I found something begging me to take it home and give it some love!! Every piece is priced right too, so you can visit with a few bucks in your pocket. Whenever I need peace and tranquility, I stop there. But truth be told, sometimes there are quite a few people there in which case I can tune out conversations and sort of meditate among the wonder fullness of all that "stuff"!

Always, though, I leave with my creativity in high gear!

We have a great big hill on the far side of our farm and when you reach the top you can look out over the entire valley and our farm.
It's the most amazing view and so peaceful, there are lots of native birds and plants and I love going there at any time of the year, it makes me remember how amazing the land is.

Annie said...

Congrats on the feature, Jodi! You are an inspiration to us all, and your artwork always makes my heart smile. The place that I have found to bring me such joy these days has been a small studio set up in my drum instructor's garage. I have been a homeschooling, stay-at-home mom for a few years now and like most moms can probably agree, I found myself lost in the midst of always giving to my family. I felt I needed to do something for myself so as crazy as it sounds, I decided to pursue a childhood interest of drumming! When I sit behind the drums in the studio, I feel like I can be free to be myself. I would love to win an art piece of yours and display it on my wall behind my new drumset to remind myself it's never too late to follow your dreams!

What a wonderful giveaway of your scrummy art. what place makes me smile? well I have to say my art room. i walk in there and I am greeted by colour and vibrancy and life, and stories and memories all contained in the things I make and more so in the tags and cards and other bits that people send to me. it literally lifts my spirit, my heart to be in here.

but there is one other place. I grew up only 5 mins walk from the beach, but now I am a 15 mins drive away. A busy life makes me forget how much i love the coast. whenever i go there, as soon as the coast is in view i feel different somehow. I cannot fully explain it, but looking out to sea brings me enormous peace.
