Film Your Art & Techniques with my 5 Top Recommendations

Do you want to video tape your art for online classes? I'm frequently asked what I use to film my online classes and other videos so I thought I'd compile a list of what I use.  Not everything is the newest model as I only tend to upgrade every couple of years.  I'm almost ready to upgrade this year adding on new microphones and MAYBE a new camcorder. I'm debating getting one with 4k but honestly, it's not really necessary for what  I'm doing.  I'd be curious to hear if anyone has one they use and would recommend.

(This post does contain links where I'll get a referral commission at no cost to you if you purchase. Your support helps me keep my content and classes developing for you!)

1. With live video becoming such a hot thing for spreading the word about what you do, having a tripod that can hold your phone/camera easily is a must.  Here's one that's affordable for most.  I'll also share one that is a little more top of the line.   Create your Facebook Live posts or Instagram stories with ease!

A little more top of the line:

2. This lighting kit is probably more than you need, but a bargain with all the extras!  I found it to be a good starter set, the tripod lighting stands aren't the sturdiest I've seen but for occasional filming, they do the job.  I've had the same bulbs for  2 years now.   The only thing I might add is a table top light, but that's just me.

3. After working with the 39.99 standard tripod you find at most electronic stores, I finally invested in a much sturdier product that also had an overhead arm.   I purchased this a few years ago and it's made all the difference in the world to me.   My filming angles are much better, set up options are infinite with the Vanguard model.  There may be newer models out there but if you can catch this on sale,  snag it up!

4.  Probably the most asked question is what camera do you use. I suggest getting a camcorder that is the best you can get within your budget.  Mine is middle of the road, it is a bit more pricey but not super expensive. One of my main requirements is great audio and super clear picture (haha, who doesn't want that), but you'd be surprised at the difference in sound and picture clarity between brands.  I wish this bundle was available when I made my purchase-it has everything you need and more to get filming!

5.  Now that you have the equipment, you need some software to edit with.  If you have a mac-well you are already taken care of with imovie, but I am a PC hold out (and in no hurry to change over), so additional software was necessary.

I chose a program for me that has more than I will probably ever use,  because as I grow in my own understanding of more complex editing options, I want a program that can grow with me.  There are a lot of video tutorials on the manufacturers website that should be more than enough to get you started.

Honestly though, in addition to having a robust program, you really need a fast computer to render your files.  If your speed is too slow, you'll find producing your videos akin to stirring molasses.  Very thick molasses!

Internet--well suffice to say you need to have lightening fast service to upload your video files as well.   Trust me on this one, after spending 4 hours uploading a 10 minute video on DSL--upgrading to the turbo charge cable internet surface was a HUGE blessing, that same video size now takes me about 7 minutes or so to upload if not faster.

I'm not an expert on how fast is optimal for your computer/internet, but my method is to get the fastest you can afford.  You'll be glad you did!

I hope you found some of these suggestions helpful as you get started filming your craft or hobby.  It's a big investment,  but you are worth it!

As I find new things or think of additional add on items you could use, I'll update this post.  Until then, hit record and have fun!

Gratefully yours,

Jodi Ohl

Art Journaling Live 2016 in Texas!

Most of you know that I love to Art Journal, time and time again it has been my refuge, my security blanket and my place to go and wander with my art supplies and ideas floating around in my head.

With art journaling, there are really no rules. That's the beauty of this sacred practice.  But at the same time, if it's something you haven't ever done before, it can be intimidating just like any new medium. Or, on the other hand, if you are familiar with art journaling but looking for new ideas and fresh techniques--taking a workshop can be just the remedy you are looking for to spark that creative art journaling muse.

You never know where it may lead you.

So many pages of mine have led to larger art works or color palette discoveries.

I love the fact that when you journal, the door is wide open to any and all possibilities.

Having said all that, I'm excited to share that I'm teaching an art journaling workshop  along with 3 other mixed media artists and journalers  sponsored by Create in Arlington, Texas, June 16th, 2016.

Mary Beth Shaw, Nathalie Kalbach,  Gina Rossi Armfield and myself will be taking you through a full day of activities, classes, and processes around art journaling and more.  Many techniques you can also apply to larger works of art in addition to art journaling.

During my class, you will learn about layering acrylics to create interesting backgrounds, how to create characters such as birds, fish, and or owls that have quirky personalities and then tie them into a whimsical art journal page.  I can not wait!!!!!

Here is the deal though, the space is LIMITED---so be sure to sign up as soon as possible.  Most supplies are included for the work shop and you also will have an All Access Pass to the great American Scarpbook Convention!!!

4 teachers, supplies, tons of inspiration and access to a huge convention--sounds like an arty party to me!!

Click HERE to be taken to the registration page.  I hope to see you there!

Let me know if you'll be there!

Pick Up Your Paint Brush and Join Us!!

The other day someone mentioned geez...if I had known sooner that you were coming to town, I would have signed up for your class.  Just when I think everyone has seen my message, I realize once again...there are many others that haven't heard yet!   Here's my creative public service and fun announcement!!

This week I'm heading to Florida for two classes at the new and amazing studio and creative learning space called, "Art More Place".      This will be my first time visiting Florida to teach and couldn't be more excited.   We still have a couple spaces available for both workshops, so if you are free this weekend and want to join us, please do!!  More info can be found on my 2015 workshop page.

After my trip to Florida I'll have a mini break and head back home to NY to see my family and friends for a bit then I will be taking most of the summer to dive into more classes online (filming and production takes a long long time...so I appreciate all of you who have been waiting for a new class from me, it won't be long now!!).  I'll also be working on developing a new body of work for a upcoming show and of course for future classes/galleries and Etsy.  My primary focus will be on my online classes though...well there are a couple other big things in the works but you'll have to stick around for that to be revealed ;)

Following  my summer respite, I'm heading  just outside of Asheville for a return visit to one of my all time favorite shops ever,  Random Arts in Saluda, NC.  I'll be teaching 3 classes over three days September 25-27th including two new workshops.  Wild Flowers featured below is a uber fun painting, printing and collage class that is just well, amazing and colorful. You'll learn so many techniques plus go home with a fantastic inspiring piece of art!

Schedule:

Grunge Ink - September 25
Skinny Little Mini Cities-September 26
Wild Flowers-September 27th  (rumor has it some peeps want to add birds to their pieces and I'm totally down with that!)
There's limited space available so be sure to contact Jane Powell at Random Arts to reserve your space today!

We JUST added a new workshop in Missouri coming up in October and the weekend is about 1/2 filled with students all ready!!

I'll be heading west to see Kristen Powers at her studio Rubber Moon Studios where we will be splashing away for 3 days working on 2 different projects.

First up we have a 2 day  class called Funky Little Neighborhoods and Journal Jam.    You'll learn all sorts of textural tricks and how to design a quirky neighborhood on canvas with acrylics and more.  In between painting on canvas, you have a few journal exercises to explore and paint along with.   Tons of fun for everyone.

Did I mention that for  each of the workshops at Rubber Moon Studios 99% of the supplies are included.  PLUS  lunch, drinks and snacks will be provided!!!  Whooohoo!  Just bring your favorite brushes, apron, water container and palette...we will supply the rest!

We will end the weekend with one of my favorite classes,  a 3 hour workshop called Angelic Inspirations.      Short and sweet but ohhhh so powerful,   this is another class not to miss!

For registration and more information, Click HERE

October will be whirlwind of events as soon as I return from Missouri....I'll have a couple of days break and then will be turning the car around and heading East to our beautiful Outer Banks for 2nd 2015 ReMe retreat fall retreat on Ocracoke Island.   We ONLY have 2 spaces remaining so if you want to join in on the magic...don't delay.    Our  May 2016 event is already booked up so this may be the last opportunity until late 2016 to sign up for a ReMe event!!!

ReMe is an all inclusive event (other than travel).  Arrival will be on Monday afternoon and departure Saturday Morning.  In between that time you will enjoy art parties,  all your food for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, cocktail hour,   3 classes PLUS all of your supplies,  special events and more...much much more.  If you read through some of our blog posts and peruse all the tabs on our blog, you will get a little taste of what ReMe is all about.....but nothing replaces actually being there and experiencing the magic that happens between all of our guests.

Check out the blog HERE.

BREAKING NEWS....It was just announced that for the first time, I will be heading to the famous Donna Downey studios (outside of Charlotte, NC) in January 2016.  I'll be kicking off their teaching season with a brand new 2 day workshop titled,  "It's a Whimsical Life" .  We will be painting funky houses in acrylics in a layered contemporary style that is almost a fusion of impressionism and mixed media.  Not almost, it is!   Students will also play along in their journals where we will explore color, design, shading and other fun techniques.

This weekend workshop includes all supplies for the students, lunch and snacks!!  How can you beat that?

Dates  January 16th and 17th.

For more info, click HERE.

********

Sprinkled in between all these events, I will be opening new online classes,  releasing 4 DVD's with FW Media this Fall,  hosting a few local classes at a new venue...(stay tuned),  working on some product designs,  having a solo show in October, and maybe one other out of town weekend in November.  I'll be sure to update you as soon as I have concrete information, dates, times, descriptions, etc.!

I finally reached my 100 item goal that I set out to achieve last December in my Etsy shop.

Stop by and see tons of new paintings and products!!

**Any orders placed from today through Monday will be shipped out June 23rd as I will be travel teaching and away from my studio this week.**

*******************

As always, I want to thank you for following me along. I appreciate your enthusiasm, kindness, inspiration and comments.  It's hard to believe it's been almost 9 years since I first started this blog and my artistic journey!!  Wow...so much has happened during that time. I'm excited to see where this next decade and beyond will take us!!

The Burning Question: So You Want to Teach...How Do I Prepare for a Class Proposal?

Did everyone survive "Tax Day" ?  Phew..I'm glad it has come to pass and I can continue moving forward in 2015!  For today's post, I wanted to talk about a few  things.  First off, I am having a fun 'Tax Relief' sale over at Creative Workshops (or in my online shop) featuring all of my Creative Workshops online classes. I do offer classes in other venues so not to confuse anyone but the sale is for the CW classes only.  Save up to 25% off all of my classes including my Podtastic class (featured at 20% off the regular price).  If you are looking for some inspiration using mixed media painting applications, techniques galore, abstract, collage, faces and more--stop by HERE or click the image to be taken to the shop.

Perhaps online classes aren't your thing...I have a couple of spots open in my Funky Little City Scapes this Satruday, April 18th at Jerry's Artarama, in Raleigh, NC.  The class is a full day mini city painting extravaganza, full of great techniques and of course, tons of fun!

Okay...On to the topic of the day:

How Do I Create a Class Proposal

Speaking of classes,  recently I was asked by a past student of mine about sending in class proposals to teach at a small shop. What was involved? How do I price my classes and how do I ensure I make a profit in doing so?  I  thought that if one person had this question, perhaps a few others of you may have this same question, so today I'm going to share a few tips to help you gather your thoughts and wrap your arms around what you need to do get started teaching what you love.

Disclaimer-this list is in no way all inclusive nor does it mean that this is the only way to do this, it merely is a sharing of my own experiences. I've been teaching online for over 7 years and I have taught at large national retreats, mid size galleries and shops, and local and small shops/venues, so while not all inclusive, it is well rounded.

First Things First

Make sure you are ready to teach your processes. When you embark on a teaching career as an artist, you are inspiring and guiding others to go down a creative path as well. You in a sense, have to be willing to let go of what you do and not hold back the information the students need to be successful. There is a high  likelihood that your designs will be replicated by many and you have to be okay with that as it is the way students learn until they find their own way. If you are not at peace with that thought, than don't teach that what is still too close to you.

1 1 /2 day extended version of Funky Little Beach Scapes at the Art More Place in Melbourne, Florida this June.

How Do I Price My Classes?

Similar to pricing your work, your creative class offerings evolve based on your experience, your credibility, the demand for your services,  and the uniqueness of your class/you in the field you are teaching. One of the best things you can do is to research on your own, artists/instructors that you feel are on the same peer level as you and see what they are charging for their classes.  Be mindful of the length of class, location (is travel or overnight stays required),  size of venue, and what supplies the teacher is expected to provide (if any) to the students.

All of these factors can effect your prices slightly, however once you have a class outline in place-be very careful of not changing the prices of your class by the venue unless there is a significant reason why you would do so.

Remember when pricing your classes, to include the prep time it takes to create the class, the samples, travel if needed, the uniqueness of your workshop, and of course profit.    Be very careful when agreeing to do a class that pays by the hour or is asking for multiple days of instruction over a period of weeks.  There's not only a time commitment on your part,  you need to know how many students you will be teaching  and if there are any guarantees for you as an instructor.    I personally do not teach by the hour for a one time event.   The reason is that financially it doesn't make sense to do that nor is it competitive with other classes that I offer both in person and online.

Know What Is Included and Is Expected

Is travel required?  Who pays for any food and lodging that you will incur as an expense?  Is the cost of airfare your responsibility or the venue?  What marketing will you both need to do? Who covers the expense? Do they have a marketing plan in place to promote your event?  You also have to have a marketing plan to be successful.   Will you be providing the supplies? Will the students be bringing their own supplies? Or will the venue be providing the supplies for a cut of your overall class fee? Is there an exclusivity agreement that is required (can you teach your class elsewhere in the area or for a period of time)?  Are you able to charge a fee for supplies you are asked to bring (remember, your supplies used are not free!  Even if you get a sponsor,  and get free supplies, or some samples...there ALWAYS is an expectation for you to do something for those supplies in return which takes time (like sample projects, videos, blog posts, social media promotions).   Be sure to take this into account when pricing your classes at least as an underlying cost of doing business.

I'll be honest, this is an area I am trying to do better in and be more realistic myself.  My inclination in the past is to say YES to everything and figure out the details later, which has left me in a not so great position in some cases.    I've even gone in the 'hole' teaching at certain venues because of not truly figuring out all the expenses before hand.   With that said, there can be reasons why you choose to take a chance on teaching in a location that may not be financially lucrative (long term opportunities, to build your resume, to break into a new market,  to build a student following, to view it as a marketing opportunity, to test out a class process in a small market that you will take and bring to a larger market with additional opportunities).

One of the things I feel I can do better at is having clear expectations on my travel engagements especially and to have an outline on my minimums, expenses, and other variables that I can just send to prospective venues when I am asked to teach.   Some places have very standard contracts in place and they already have those factors outlined, that's not to say you can't negotiate those items if you are called to do so, and other venues sit quietly and let you make the first move  when discussing the financials.  The standards  aren't necessarily even or the same across the board per instructor.  I don't feel this is a bad thing, after all everyone is looking to make a living, but I am saying, that the more prepared YOU are and the more YOU know what you can and can't do...and why, the better off everyone will be and the likelihood everyone will be happy with the arrangement.

Lastly

There are many times when you are called upon to teach what you love that may fall out of the realm of all these guidelines.  For example,  volunteer projects,  demonstrations,  blog post tutorials,  lectures, interviews,  donations, etc.  Many,  if not most, of these opportunities are very worthy of your time, but remember before you say yes to everything, choose your projects wisely and go with what your heart tells you to do. You can get very burnt out by saying yes to it all because as creatives, our hearts are so big and empathetic to all causes and requests for our time and talent, we forget how much energy (time and money) is expended going in a different direction that is not aligned with our goals and aspirations.  Don't make the mistake of undervaluing what you do and come to your agreement to doing something for 'exposure' or for a cause out of fear....make the decision out of love, love for others as much as a love for yourself and your family.

Teaching other artists to do what you do should also come from a place of love and true desire to share.  Yes...I've talked a lot about the financials and expenditures because I think that artists need to understand & take into consideration all of  these things just as any small business should.  Beyond the financials is the underlying core of your calling. Are you compelled to pass on the torch of creativity?  If so, then proceed on with all that you have within you!   It doesn't make you any less or anymore of an artist if you teach or not teach, it just puts you on a different career path-one that I hope you proceed on with open eyes, an open heart, and a passion that fuels not just you..but all of your students.

Unfinished Business and a Coupon Code (expires today!)

Sometimes I drive myself nuts.

Starting and stopping multiple projects at once and have things going on everywhere.   There really is a method to my madness and most of the time I do it in the name of 'efficiency'  or frugal-ness (I don't want to waste paint and to keep busy while things are drying).
But....

But...

If I'm honest with myself, sometimes I have multiple projects going on at once because I don't know what the next step is for the piece I'm working on so rather than stare at it, I move on to something else, meanwhile I hope that piece of the puzzle will come to me while keeping busy.

Sometimes that method works...and sometimes that method does not work.  I could make a case for multi-tasking and how wonderful it is.... and I could also make a case that it causes chaos and procrastination if you take it too far. (I do the latter more than the former!)

You can't force inspiration but you can force yourself to not walk away from something that is sooo close to being finished.  You need to tell yourself you can and you will work out the kinks and finish what you started.

Or not.

I only know myself and that 'self' needs a kick in the arse every once in awhile otherwise there's a heck of a lot of chaos and not whole lot of finished work which causes me anxiety which in turn causes me to stress out...none of which is good for the creative soul.

I'm showing you this piece that is unfinished but I've been adding to it  little by little over the last month.  Really, a month??  lol     It's so close I can taste it.  I just need to finish it.  By admitting to my big procrastination disguised as multi tasking habits, maybe it'll inspire me to show you the finished work in my next piece so we can put this baby to rest and move on to new work.
Sounds good?
(another unfinished work)

Do you have any less than ideal habits in the studio?
I'm not going to say 'bad' because multi tasking for me isn't necessarily a bad habit it's necessary most of the time--my dealio or deal breaker happens when I have 20 works going on an nothing is finished! :))

Say It or Paint It With Love

How many ways can you (or do you) show love through your art?

grungeink
With tomorrow being Valentine's Day, I thought I'd pull a few pictures from my 'archives'  that showed a little 'love' . Gosh, looking back at these paintings, you'd think I have been in a world wind romance with some dashing man who has swept me off my feet!!!  Well the truth is, lately, my Valentine's have been reserved for 2 dashing men...my wonderful sons of course, Josh and Zach.  :)
That doesn't mean you can't manifest dreams and desires through your art, or just work through feelings and thoughts as you are creating.   That's one of the things I enjoy most....getting my thoughts out on the canvas, especially those that I can't say out loud or in person.
sweethearts
And sometimes a simple word is all you need to hear  or see to make you feel that you can, you will, you ARE, or will become.  Art has magical powers tlike that.
everyday ornaments by jodi ohl
And if you don't hear it enough,   sometimes hanging a little reminder in your studio, office space, or other location will bring you back to the place you need to be.
funky birds by jodi ohl

Sometimes my paintings are about conversations I've had or want to have with someone.  I love this piece above.  It's not so much a conversation I've had but one I'd had like to have had with someone.
It's fun to create these micro-worlds of possibilities.
love textured by jodi ohl

What can I say but I L-O-V-E this piece above. The texture, the many under layers peeking through but yet they are all leading to the the same outcome.  Love. A super fun piece to do.
painted collage by jodi ohl
As I was searching for pieces to share for this post, I came across these oldie but goodies.  I had a class featuring these along with an article in a magazine. I call thses my story block collages.  Mostly painted but there are some 3 d elements as you can see from the hearts.  In my classes students added all sorts of fun embellishments in addition to the hearts. I love sparking ideas and seeing where my students take them. It's an amazing process!
painted collage by jodi ohl
It's funny as I reflect back over the last several years, part of the reason I stumbled into the art world was because of my heart being broken, rather shattered into a million pieces....it's such a long story but the beginning of it was all about me falling for someone and how my life changed because of that love story.  I guess on the outside, it may seem like a tragic story but through all the bad came this amazing good life that I have now.
I guess I still process all the events of the last many years through art.
journal page by jodi ohl
Not just thoughts about love, but about life in general. My art isn't about some larger political or socioeconomic questions that plague the world, rather my pieces are about everyday life, relationships, family, friends, community....connections.  We all want to feel connected in some way.  Needed in some way.
Creating has a way of getting those feelings out and telling our story in our own way.  Sometimes it's in your face and quite clear what you are trying to say.
stenciled painting by jodi ohl
expand your heart by jodi ohl
...and other times, the message isn't as easily discerned..but it's still there.

What do you say in your art? Have you noticed any trends or messages that appear time and time again?  What does it say about you or your process?

I hope you have a wonderful Valentine's Day and enjoy the weekend by being surrounded by those that you love.  And if by chance you are alone for the day,  do something amazing and special for YOU.  You deserve it!
