I can't come up with something fun or clever to write, so I'll go with honest instead :)

"Zen" to me means that which is beyond all forms, the stateless state that is never not present, that isn't other than my innermost being, the very essence of what I truly am.

My life -- moment to moment -- is my koan, and therefore anything and everything I do (and don't do) is a part of my zen practice. Having fun with paint and mark making is most definitely included! :)

Big warm thanks for the chance to win! <3

What a lovely thing to do! What puts me into a state of zen is anything quiet, stress free or repetitive such as walking on the beach or in the mountains, gardening solo and stitching anything by hand!

You are always so generous! I reach my state of zen when I can quit worrying about "what" I am going to paint or draw and just relax and see what happens. That doesn't happen very easily. I am hoping your workshop will help me reach a state of zen more easily.

Hoping to find my Zen in this class. Not sure where or when that is. But as you said in your intro...too many of my days are just wasted due to a total lack of ambition and that is not the typical me.

Caroline D. said...

Well of course art brings zen to my soul. But anything I do, like my daily walks and art journaling, which I can quieten all the "what if's" and worries of today's evil world. Art especially brings me great joy and I love trying new things and new techniques. Thank you for the chance to win a spot in your new class!!

Zen for me today is different than it was just one week ago. On 9/9 I had a double mastectomy and will be laid up for quite a few weeks. So as I lay here this first week I'm clearing my mind(because it's too painful to even color) clearing my mind of all negative thoughts and feelings that come with being diagnosed with cancer.the new path I'm on has been sweet thus far because it's brought my husband and I some needed together time, while he's been my care giver he's also slowed me down. And that is where ZEN is for me these days. It's in the quiet, it's in the mind. But soon it will be on paper and it's that day that keeps me going! Thank you for giving all of us the opportunity to win a seat!! I hope to come visit you at your shop when I'm well enough.

Zen is the moment before you brayer off on a waste piece of paper and you have no concern for the result. Magic happens on that waste paper. Why do I care so much, lord knows, but I’m learning bit by bit not to. I’m learning to zen. :)

I don't necessarily believe in "Zen" because I am a Christian but I do believe that faith and creativity play into the outcome of my art. I always kiss the animals that I paint when I finish. A little crazy I suppose but I have fun.

Unknown said...

Zen to me is a state I cultivate in my morning meditations (I do the 21 Day meditation series by Oprah and Depak Chopra). If I am lucky, the state remains for most of the day, but I can always remind myself if I get out of it, simply by stopping and closing my eyes while doing some deep breathing. Zen in my art is what I call being in the "zone"...that point of play where you get lost in the moment and the moment turns to blissful hours of joy! Going now to share your post and will comment again when I do.

Hello, there! Thx for the opportunity to participate whether as a guest (FREE! YEA, FREE!) or as a student.

Zen, to me, is letting go of the illusions of reality and being in the moment. A hot bubble bath, floating in a pool, being in the creating mode.

I look forward to this class opening up another creative path, tweaking the inner muse's nose, so to speak with things I've not yet played with.

Again thx for the opportunity and I'm sharing this on my facebook page as soon as I submit this comment! Much success to you!

Creating art is my zen. My professional career exists to afford me the luxury of great classes like yours, traveling to attend art retreats and seminars, and paying for new art supplies! After a rough day at work -- or ANY day at work really -- all I can think about is getting home and picking up a pen or a paint brush or glue. I quickly get lost in the feelings of the paint or where my pen is going and don't realize it's the middle of the night! This course would provided additional opportunity for zen -- an excuse to pick up the paints and pens more often, while learning new techniques along the way. (Don't you just love being an "excuse?!") :-)

Thanks for offering the giveaway, Jodi. This is incredibly generous and wonderful, and whoever wins it will be One Lucky Duck!

Painting or doing anything crafty brings zen into my life. I crave creativity, but I crave the peace I gain from being creative even more.
I am taking this class in hopes of learning how to use the mediums, but I hope to discover that I have some potential originality tucked away. I tend to follow artists, but I am struggling with branching out on my own!

Would love to win - just shared your video with my local art tribe this morning and was wishing finance would open up so I could do the online version.

What aids my zen? Instrumental or flow style music... candles... some crystals and my mini shrine thing... yoga mat LOL mostly the music though - helps me relax and open up my intuition to deeper creative levels.

This is so wonderful for you to offer 2 spots in your class. I was going to sign up, but then the Mr. lost his only account he still has. That means super tightening of the money belt! Well, this is my 3rd time trying to post my comments! So this is the SUPER condensed version: My zen moments are when I'm creating... usually writing poetry or prose or crafting. It's when I open myself up to just being in THIS one moment, not trying to go from point a to b but just being in the flow. It's when I'm at peace and in joy and time is suspended and the creating is so effortless it's as if I'm "channeling" rather than doing the creating myself. SOMETIMES, I'm able to reach this state while making 2D art, but not often. For some reason with 2D art I often get roadblocked by mind chatter like "What's your VISION for this piece?" and "How will you accomplish that vision?" and "What's your PLAN?" This kind of self-questioning is a real buzz kill to art-making for me, but this Zen Art Class is just SPEAKING to me... telling me that THIS may be my path into a JOYFUL journey of creating 2D art!

Caren Stuart said...

I've shared this great class and giveaway on facebook and I'll share it again tomorrow. WooHoo! (Just cuz I'm THAT excited about it) YAY!

Unknown said...

For me, Zen requires unplugging. I have to get away from social media and news stories. Most often, I sit or walk near water to get to that quietness where I can simply be. I am learning to find that place through creative practice, like conscious writing, painting, and tangling/doodling. But I would love to dive deeper into using art as meditation, and I think this class can help with that. I've shared the post on Facebook, Google+, and Pinterest. And good luck to everyone who has entered!

A state of Zen is much harder to achieve than we like to imagine because in reality, life is full of demands, routines and expectations and it can take all our might to find our moment of zen.

I used to run on empty, similar to you Jodi but my health decided for me that I was going to slow down and regain some zen in my life. Now I paint, I create, I chat and I enjoy the little things more.

Thank you for sharing your passion with us. This is exactly what we all need to help us find those moments of zen xx

My zen experience is when I zone out to the everyday thoughts and worries that can plague me. There is a loss of the consciousness of time. I am focused and aware of only the present. I would like this class to help me to get to the zen on a regular, more frequent basis. Thanks, Jodi!

Oh, this looks like such a wonderful class! I sometimes get in a very "Zen" zone while creating - I get lost in the process of collaging and painting, and the music I'm usually listening to (which is often pretty mellow) helps contribute to the mood. But I'm always looking for ways to improve on my art, since I sometimes lose my "Zen" mood when I become too self critical. Thanks for the chance to win a spot - I've also shared on twitter!

Hmmm, zen...Zen doesn't come easily for me. I try and try to get to that state but with a high pressure job working for a heart surgeon and a senior in high school daughter applying to colleges right now I'm not sure if I can achieve it on my own. I was falling down the wonderland hole of the Internet this morning and stumbled upon your post. Maybe it's fate and someone is trying to tell me I need more zen in my life, lol. I have dabbled in digital and cut and paste collage but would love to expand my horizons with your techniques.

Zen to me is the release and letting go state of peace that allows your energy to flow within. It then permeates and connects to the energy outside affecting others around you positively. For me to be in zen, I must be using my hands and head in a connected way. I haven't painted in years but for 30 days I did an Ensō practice which blessed my life. I look forward to taking your class and creating something new with a medium that I haven't had the impetus to enjoy before. I have long admired your work and this looks fun!

Meditating brings a state of Zen, of course, and being in nature. But when I can lose myself in my artwork, free of agendas and experiencing the joy of the media and the sheer beauty of the colors, I am in the moment and time has no meaning. That is my Nirvana. This class would mean learning new things and focussing again on art and color after a long spell of illness. I admire your work and look forward to seeing your book arrive.

I think Zen is a very personal state of mind and being. To me it all depends on what is going on in life. The more drama and god knows I have enough to share at some points in time, the harder it is to get to the Zen place. Before I became disabled my place use to be sitting on the beach at 9pm, the moon above and not a sole on the beach. As I can no longer walk there I've had to find other ways. Today my Zen place is sitting at my desk and no TV on, no phone ringing, no drama and a pot of fresh brewed coffee. Total silence. Being on a fixed income and disabled doesn't allow much in way of funds for extras so to win a seat in this class would be fantastic.

Wonderful ZEN moment achieved while I float in my 85 degree pool on a nice hot summer day ~ and now that summer is coming to an end :( I must find others ways to get to that ZEN place. Can't think of any better way than following along with your newest class! Thank you so much for the chance to play!

Creating Art of any kind is very zen for me. I would love to explore abstraction and mark making and other ways to expand my creative vocabulary with your class. I adore your zen paintings!

I love to doodle mandalas with black fine tip ink pen and then color it in with markers the next time. I never think too much about the design. I just go with the flow. I feel the zen in this process. I never know what will emerge. It's so relaxing and really frees my mind of control.
I tried to submit a comment earlier on my phone but don't think it went though.
Thanks for this giveaway.

Zen to me means that place where all your stress and worries melt away and you can then find peace quiet and inspiration for my art. Thank you for a chance to win !

Just shared your class to FB. I'm new to mixed media and love it. I want to be exposed to and learn all I can!

Zen to me would be the ability to learn techniques for painting, and then be able to create a painting without replicating someone else's work.

Beth Macre said...

Zen to me if uninterrupted drawing/painting time in my studio. I have been wanting to do more painting but I am looking for a new direction for my work. I think this class would be a great boost to start that process. :)

What is zen for me varies depending on the day or the mood I am in, but whatever the activity that brings it about (drawing, painting, creating, crocheting, exercising, hiking or gardening, or even simply petting my cats in the sunshine, the feeling is always the same: a sense of quiet, calm, meditation, peace and happiness.

What brings a state of Zen into your life and how would this course benefit you?

Bright, fun colors is my Zen in life. So whether I'm painting or drawing, as long a color is involved, I'm Zenful :) This course would help me to be more carefree in my art and allow me to explore new techniques. Thanks for a chance to win! ~Sophia Vida

My Zen comes from just getting in to my studio and creating! Some days that seems so very hard to do. I think this class would inspire me to just relax and find that part of myself again that can let go of the brain clutter and just paint! Thank you Jodi!

CathyB said...

Zen....a way to relax and let the problems of the day disappear. Painting does the same for me so I can only imagine how relaxed I will feel adding Zen to the mixture. Can't wait for this class to start. Your art is fabulous and so inspiring. Only thing that would make any of this better is if I were to win! hehe Thanks Jodi! :0)

Playing with paint in the early morning hours, with no distractions, is where i find that zen place. I love taking classes to learn new techniques and ways to incorporate what i learn into my own art. I also love learning how to use supplies in new and different ways. Thanks Jodi :) Looking forward to the class!!

Zen for me is just immersing myself in the experience of creating. No distractions, just feeling the brushstrokes and the evolution of the painting.

Zen for me is time in my little studio getting all painty and messy, sometimes by myself and sometimes with my hubby at the other easel...he's just starting out and didn't know he even liked painting...hahaha! The other Zen for me is hanging out with you, Jan and Jean in the studio in Vass...thats definitely a happy place for me! Looking forward to the class on Zen painting!

I am someone who struggled with finding my zen when i kept trying the supposed to's and shoulds- yoga, meditation, minimalism etc

I am a maximalist- love colour, texture, layers and being surrounded by things that i love.

I found zen in doing with intention- drawing mandalas, hiking and pausing to notice Mother Nature, being absorbed in my art, reading or movie watching.

I want to take this class because it is the missing link in my art journey- bright colours, lots of layers and texture but with my love of leaving white space and trying to do more with less.

Love your work.

Hi - I find my zen when I have quiet time at my workbench, no interruptions, favorite music playing, and some unhurried creative time. And I find Zentangling to be quite Zen - lots of repetitive lines and patterning without having to think about it too much. Thanks for the chance to win a spot!

Lori Lewis said...

To me, Zen is that quiet, calm time where I loose myself in my art. I get such peace when I can just relax and play and let the art lead me. I'm hoping to learn how to intentionally get to this Zen state more easily in your class.
Congratulations on the new book!

Just shared it too. And I signed up for your newsletter earlier this month - if that gets any "bonus" points - fingers crossed! Thanks!

I am at my best when I am painting and creating. I guess I can describe it as being "in the zone," very 1970s and attributed to the great Arthur Ashe who won many tennis matches on this concept. I would love to open myself up and learn this unique artistic approach.

Hi Jodi - thanks so much for the amazing opportunity to win a spot on your course. I actually find it quite hard to find my Zen, relaxing is not quite in my nature and even when I go for a massage I keep getting told to 'relax'. The only time I can really say I'm Zen is sitting by water and listening to the noise, or when I play with paint, spray or ink - but it has to be without a plan, must be for no reason, no purpose! Would love to know more about your Zen painting :)

Zen to me is finding joy in the little things each day. When I can shake away negative attachments and just relax and let life flow. It is hard with a negative person living in the same house, but it is possible. Experimenting with paints, watching how they blend, how the consistency changes with a different media added, the various textures that can be created brings me a better understanding of how I need to allow myself the same ability to to take what life brings me and become beautiful for it. Thank you for this opportunity.

What brings a state of Zen into your life and how would this course benefit you

Space brings a state of Zen into my life. Physical and mental space. I manage physical space by going outside on my patio and sitting in my favorite rocking chair and leaning back and staring at the sky, this experience opens up my body to space and my mind as I gaze into the vast sky. This is vitally important to me as I tend to fill my life with business. I love the sense of space this course will teach on canvas. To literally create it on canvas feels like another outlet of creating what I need within.

lately it's been the zen doodling, tangling, mark making... it helps bring me to a state of zen... and as a self-taught artist, it would be so amazing to be able to learn from you, I admire your style and work so very much!

Due to some fairly serious injuries from a fall earlier this year I haven't had the opportunity to experience many 'Zen' moments this year.
The experience of Zen for me occurs when I am doi my art - the world recedes and nothng else matters. I have not a care in the world! I would love to win a spot in this course so I can reach that 'Zen' feeing again

Zen to me is being in the Flow, in the Moment, and feeling Oneness. Times when I have felt this way are in nature, when creating, especially painting, and meditating. Some involve wonderful music. I get so engrossed in what I'm doing, I'm not myself anymore, I am a tool for God/Spirit to flow through and shine. Those moments are jewels and seem to come less frequently in this busy stressful life; you have to carve out time for this in a special way for yourself, giving yourself permission for "me time" to allow these moments to have the space to happen. Jodi, your work is lovely. I know how oil paints behave, but acrylics are still a mystery to me. I have no idea how you achieve what you do on the (canvas, etc). I would love to learn...but can't afford any classes or books or things like that right now. Blessings to you for offering spots in your class for free. Thanks. And Happy International Day of Peace to Everyone!! xoxo sheila

Zen, being in the moment. Calming my monkey mind. Took two of your classes in Melbourne and loved them. Thinking the zen class would take me so much further.

For me, being in a state of Zen means being at peace, focussed on where I am now, allowing myself to flow with the moment. When I create without judgement, I feel I'm in that state. This course would be an amazing exploration of color and flow. It would help me to go much farther with my art and joy.

Really looking forward to the Zen class. I have been drooling over your Zen photos for some time and hoping that one day there would be an online class.

Zen is flow, and the ability to go with that flow. Very hard for me to do in my life and my art. Definitely could use some work.
