I like to browse through my ephemera and see if anything sparks an idea. I usually find something that jump starts me :)

I brayer some paint as a background and then journal a few random thoughts in graphite. Even if it gets covered up in the final page, it breaks that "whiteness" of a blank page and gets me started.

I start with color first. I made some watered down acrylic paints in a dauber bottle to apply a light non-sticky layer of color to eliminate the "blank" page.

I put a layer of color down... any color, any method - brayer, smoosh watercolor, spray ink, swish acrylics. Anything to eliminate the white page staring at me. This retreat looks so fun! Someday I will be able to travel more...

I paint the whole page a color I like, that seems to help me past the white page.

I flip through past journals and usually the inspiration pops off those past pages I've completed. Sometimes a walk will inspire as well...each day brings a different inspiration. Would love to receive this package of yummy goodies!! Thanks Jodi for your inspiration as well!!

I like to add some color to the page by putting some Distress Paint down on my craft mat, giving it a squirt of water, then swiping the page through the different colors of paint. Just getting those colors on the paper sets the process in motion and off I go!

Sometimes I think of a quote or saying or something someone said to me and either letter that onto a blank page or write it on a scrap of paper and start pulling out colors, ephemera, bits and bobs and anything that makes me think of that quote or sayng. The inspiration usually takes over then.

I usually just start something on the page like words or thoughts. Or just grab a stencil and stary with that. Sunmoongal@me.com

I like to slap down some paint...because it will change and evolve as I art journal. Or sometimes in a pinch, I will tear and glue down a page from a magazine and then alter it!

Hi! :D
Thank you for this blog hop!
I love your Art Jodi <3 it is so vibrant and bright! :) Just love the colors you use and how you put them together, so inspiring.

Me newest favorite way of making art is to start with putting some thoughts on the paper, just very loosely and then I paint over it, sometimes I go through old Artwork in my Art Journal for instance :)

Greetings from Iceland!

Hi Jodi,
My favorite way to get started on a page that I have no clue what the heck is about to happen is to just start ripping up paper and cringling them up. It gets my energy moving and then I usually just use them for texture and see where it goes.

Great Q!!

Two things work for me. I like to just start laying a foundation of color a few pages and before I know it I am layering and creating. The other thing that works is leafing through my sketchbook for ideas.

A blank, white page/canvas can be daunting, to be sure, but I see limitless opportunities, so I might look at some stored images or issues of magazines and the first palette that jumps out at me is the base for my new piece. I gather paints, inks, and some tissue paper and start laying down a base. Where that piece goes next depends on so many factors!

I relax, listening to music. I would love to on the retreat seeing I live in the Austin area but it is just too expensive for me at this time, boohoo!

Pat Lawson said...

I usually just do a watercolor wash in my favorite color at the time!

Sandi Lou said...

I have a stash of tissue, washi papers and napkins that always seem to inspire me to get started on that new page.

I like to jump right in on that blank page! I've found many ways to conquer that initial step. My favorite method so far is drawing random scribbles with a water-soluble pencil OR if I'm working on a digital piece, I almost always start with an abstract, textured photo for a background.
Thanks Jodi! Great first time visiting your blog :)
