Bumper to Bumper

Getting through to the heart of the 5 mile yard sale this weekend was a test of my best Nascar skills at 3 miles an hour. It was pure bumper to bumper in the center of the sale, which I can not stand. Well, who loves traffic anyway? I'm sure no one wakes up in the morning and says, "Hey, I hope we run into a nice traffic jam today to make my morning all that much more pleasant!" In anycase, me, DS's 1 and 2 and my neighbor and her son trucked off at 8 am to hit the sale full swing, from beginning to end. I think we missed only about 4 of the sales dotted along the highway in total.
My take home? Less than a trunkload and not even a total of 10 dollars spent! Amazing, right?? I'm not sure what my problem was--too much to choose from or too little in the way of items that attracted my eye?? My best deal, well, second to best deal was a really beautiful quilt to use this winter (it's not quite a Christmas quilt but has holiday colors of red and green), for a BUCK! There was no price on it, so when I took it up to the seller, I had my mind set on if it was 5 dollars or thereabouts, it was mine....when she said a DOLLAR...I'm like, this is sooo mine. :) I also picked up some Nortika salt and pepper shakers and gravy boat for a dollar total, some pretty FREE plates (my best deal) and a pampered chef pan. Oh--and some free vintage wallpaper. I'm not sure how vintage it is, but it was in a box marked free and it was just about 2 rolls in total, so I couldn't pass it up. I will put it to use somehow, someway.

With gas prices the way they are, this was a nice way to get out of the house for a half day and enjoy some good ole country thrifting. Hopefully, in the fall when they put on their next 5 mile sale I'll have better thrifting mojo. I never really seem to pick up the vintage treasures I see some of my thrifty friends pick up. I guess I need to get my butt up earliar to snag those??

I finished my floral doodle tray finally--here's the finished version with the sides completed and the top glaze on it. I'm pretty pleased at how it came out-there's a ton of detail on it and it's bursting with color.

I'm still trying to figure out how to work this camera. I'm not sure I like how it takes pictures. (((shhh don't tell DS that, he'd be hurt!)) I'm sure it's NOT the picture taker ;) Excuse the messy backdrop-I snapped these after DS's shower. After the big sale this weekend, we stopped at the pool for a few hours so I definitely had some fun in the sun. Next up was some grillin on the Bar-B--which I am still honing my skills at. I can do chicken, porkchops, what have you but burgers?? Nope....they miserably failed me. After a few flames stoking up and the burgers dripping through the grates, I took them off and finished off in the house. One of these days I will figure it out. Hopefully.

Every other week, I meet my X here to pick up my oldest for the weekend. South of the Border has to be the cheesiest place I've ever been too. Have any of you all driven through here on your way to Florida or Myrtle Beach?? You can't miss the somberero on your way through the 95 corridor! Someone told me you can go up to the top of it, but I've never tried nor do I ever want to....in fact they have several rides here too, but I've haven't once seen any of them going on any of my travels through this little oasis in the middle of nowhere. I think they call it South of the Border because it's just South of the NC border, and it's about the halfway point for a trip to Florida from NY along 95. At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I hope everyone has a nice Memorial Day, please take a moment and remember the reason for this day. :)
Visit Mizz Smoochie Lips for some great photos on their Memorial Day ride, very touching.

The yard sales look like they were fun. I like to comb through other peoples things especially when there is lots of it. Treasure hunting at its best.

We have been to South of the Border. I don't remember if we did the rides (I stopped there for the night with the boys on a trip from Florida) as the boys were little then. 4 and 6. But we did go into their pool and the interior seemed old 50's or 60's.

I love your tray, the colors are so vibrant! I had a similar yard sale weekend, I didn't walk away with much. Sounds like you got a great deal on the quilt though!

Isn't that funny, sometimes that happens to me too. When there is too much stuff it's like over stimulation or something... I have made the drive from NY to Fl many times and never stopped in South of the Border. It has really changed a lot since the '70s. I haven't made that drive in about 10 years now, so I'm sure it's even different than I remember by now.

Sounds like a fun holiday weekend, even though the yard sales didn't have too many treasures. I'm sure you'll enjoy the quilt come December, though.

Your finished floral doodle tray looks great...very whimsical and fun!

I love Pedro and South of the Border. It's my favorite cheesy souvenir shop (and rest stop) ever! It even tops the "world's biggest souvenir and native american craft" shop in Las Vegas.

And I just happen to be a photographer (people pay me and everything, I promise) so if you need some assistance, I'd be happy to help :-)
