my favorite tip is repeating the colors for a series. funny, I always feel like everything needs to look different. one reason i'm so slow, I guess. love, love, love these dirty birds!

My favorite comment is "If you are creating a collection of paintings, repeat colors in each of the pieces to different degrees so that each piece will coordinate together in cohesive way. I try to start several paintings all at once so this is possible, especially if I am making my own custom colors. " I love purple and I tend to use it in many of my pieces. Sometimes I think "Too much purple!" I like the idea of beginning several paintings at once to coordinate better. I am definitely going to incorporate this into my studio practice.

I loved all your tips but my favorite was repeating colors in a series. Beginning a series was on my 'to do list' as I really want to create a body of work this year. Please throw my hat in the ring, as an admirer of you work I would love a chance to win!

I have found that the best way for me to stay motivated to paint and create is to have a space where I can leave my work out so that even if I only have a few moments to paint I don't waste time putting supplies out and then packing them away. It also helps keep my mind on the project at hand if I can see it throughout the day. marthakisling@msn.com

To get more motivated during a slump I often watch old class videos or you tube for inspiration. Something within is always stirred up and I get to creating promptly. Sometimes even playing with my gelatin plate helps. I love your dirty flirty birdies Jodi!

Motivation during the cold months??? I LOVE the cold months!! :) Whether looking up at a clear, crisp blue winter sky, or looking out through the winter branches, nature inspires me ridiculously. A tip from a class I grabbed of yours from Northlight is the veiling of a canvas. Love. Dirty Birds looks so dang happy!! A Perfect course for the Winter months! :) Noellemena@mac.com (because I never know if Google will give it to you!)

I would love to take this class. I took your grunge class and you made so easy. The tip I like is don't be afraid to do a series. Sometimes that is scary.

Going to share this giveaway on FB - Judy

I like your tip about not being afraid to create a series. I like to make similar things, but always thought others would find that boring. Good to know its okay! I have not signed up for this class (money is really tight right now) and I would love the opportunity to learn more from you. I shared this on Facebook, too. zoenelson@bellsouth.net

Hi Jodi! I loved your tips about creating series of paintings, this is something I'm going to work on this year. I would really, really love to take this class, it is the first class of yours that I am missing! I've taken all of your classes and do love them so!

Thank you for the giveaway. My favorite tip is about brushes. I went the cheap route and had nothing but frustration: using the wrong size for the job, getting brush hairs all over my painting, etc. I have purchased a few really good quality brushes and now just need (hint, hint!) a class to use them in. :)

my best tip is to always start with a clean work area then you can go straight in and start creating thanks for the chance to win

I've already registered, Jodi, but I did want to share a tip. I suffer - as do many people - from seasonal affective disorder which means I tend to become moderately depressed during the cold, dark time of year. If a stretch of dark, dreary weather lasts for a week or more, I almost become paralyzed, just sitting and not getting anything done at all, much less anything creative. Last year I found a small "daylight lamp" at Bed, Bath & Beyond. The label on it said it was specifically to help treat this disorder. They had several types in a variety of sizes. I just bought a small one. It was wonderfully helpful!! I got moving and active within just a few days of using it according to the instructions that came with it, and in no time at all I was painting again and feeling happier. Another tip is creating a "couch box" of art supplies that I keep by the couch so that when I give in to the blahs, I can sit on the couch in my pajamas and fuzzy socks, wrapped in a blanket, and create!

Kim said...

I chain myself to the chair. Kidding! Sort of..... I clean off my work table so there is not one thing on it. A brand new notebook, an untouched pad of paper, and an empty work table somehow make me itch to start a project. Then I put my little space heater under the table (in winter) and light a scented candle...far enough away that I can't wash my brush in it accidentally. And finally, I set up my laptop with a movie or a book on tape that I want to see/hear. Weirdly, that helps me focus.

Love the heart you have for other artists!

Wow Jodi, how generous. I would love this class. I know you are a wonderful teacher. Thanks for the opportunity.

My favorite tip for getting motivated is to pick a box, drawer, tote and start to go through it. Much of the time if an embellishment or paint color is out of sight ,it's out of mind. Just reminding myself of what I have gets me excited to start a new project. Also, keeping the current project out where I can see it keeps me motivated to come back and work on it some more!

Melinda C said...

My most favorite recent tip has been Liquid Glazing. I couldn't ever figure out how other people were able to get such soft blendable colors on their projects. Liquid Glazing mixed with the paint makes such a difference. Would love to take this class!

After taking your "Funky Little Cityscapes", and enjoying it so much, I am really looking forward to the "Dirty Flirty Birds" class.
I think the tip you gave about repeating similar colours in a series is great, and one I need to remember.
When I am stumped, and can't seem to get motivated, I find the best thing to do is go through photos of all my old artwork (whatever the media - mine is glass beads). I remember things I have done and things I wanted to do by looking at the photos, and I am off and running!

Studio Rose said...

Ohhh, these naughty birds! I love them and always love your use of bold color. Took a class with you at one of the last Cloth Paper Scissors retreats (so sorry to see them go!) and had such a great time getting messy.

My tip is to clean your workspace! No matter how unmotivated I am, within a few minutes of putting my art supplies in their "proper" places (I'm still working on proper places for some of them!), I start getting that itch to create. Maybe it's because I'm already there and because cleaning is such a drag.

Unknown said...

I'm just finishing up 'Funky little Cityscapes' and I have to say your use of black in the under painting is genius, it just seems to free up the painting so much more and everything starts flowing so much better from there.

These are my favorite words ---
""Accepting your style and who you are is not always the easiest thing. Whether in art or in the bathroom as you look in the mirror, remember that we often are our own worst critics.""

I so need to just create and forget those voices and doubts.

I love your style and those birds look like so much fun!!

I've come to realize that most of the time my lack of motivation is also a fear of getting started or fear of failure, subconsciously worrying that my project won't turn out. My dear friend, Donna, gave me a a copy of one of her art journal pages with the following saying - If you can't take a risk with a piece of paper in life, good luck! (Jessa Reno). It really puts things into perspective for me. Just do it! Thanks for the opportunity. nthumand@hotmail.com

Thanks so much for this opportunity! Between the holidays and winter (and what seems to be my never ending cold), it's so easy to become disconnected from being creative. Taking that first step to start sorting through my supplies, and organizing things helps me reconnect to my creativity and my supplies.

This is the perfect class for the winter blues!

Hi! Wow, What a generous offer!! I have two tips actually. The first thing I do is dig around in the leftover bits of my paper/ ephemera box and see if something strikes me and it usually does. The second thing I do is look back through photos of older work and see if I can see a twist on something I've already done. I'm almost done with your Podtastics video series ( which I'm loving) so this would be perfect timing to win.

Oh wow, I have been eyeballing this class for a couple of weeks already. I'd love the opportunity for a scholarship! My go-to motivation tool is my Pinterest account. Not the home page or your main page, but the actual boards that you created to stash pics of the things that inspire you. Go open up one of those boards, and let the colours and shapes wash over your parched eyes. It never fails to get me going. : )

Oooh... those birdies are looking so lovely and happy!
When I have a creative idea, I write it down in my little 'book of ideas'. I'm doing this already for years. And from time to time it's so fun and inspirational to have a look in it! I also have a lot of books about illustrations for children's books. I always found new beautiful details in those books!
And online-classes are always good for motivation! New ideas, interaction with other creative people! :) I already signed up for a year long class, but I'm sure that there is space left for some Dirty Flirty Birds (great name!!)!

Smiles from Belgium, Saskia :)

What a generous giveaway thanks! My tip relates back to brushes and keeping them nice and clean and conditioned. Murphy's oil soap is the secret. Once a month or so I give them a good soaking in a 100% solution of it for about 24 hrs. after that, I dump half out and replace with water and let that soak for 24 hrs. Then I rinse really really thoroughly until all soap is gone. Brushes are left silky smooth.
I have shared this post and I am not previously signed up for the class. Thank you again for the opportunity!!

It helps me to have my supplies out and accessible and to just "begin" with getting something onto the paper such as writing, gesso, collage, anything. And not to worry about any results. Letting the piece speak to me in a sense is helpful and knowing I can always cover up anything I do not like. I just keep telling myself it is a joy to play with papers, colors, paint. Just love to create art and I know if I just do it I will feel better! Love your work Jodi! I will go and figure out how to share this now! How generous of you to offer a scholarship and a free class!

You are a sweetie to give away scholarships! I love the dirty birds, by the way. When I am in a funk I tell myself I am going to see how many terrible paintings and drawings I can make in an hour. I just tear into it, and usually before long I have something I like and can develop or that sparks my enthusiasm again. I can't think of a time this trick failed me-- and I do get the gloomies this time of year.

Hi Jodi
You have so many helpful tips that I have begun to use especially since getting your video on grunge ink.
Creating a series I find very helpful with a continuance of color which makes for a great complimentary pairing of art. Multiple brushes of the same size for warm and cool colors while painting is also beneficial for me.
I would be so excited to add the flirty birds to my learning experience.

The tip I've been finding the most helpful lately is something that Alan Watts talks about in his book The Way of Zen. It's about practicing without ever "trying". He writes:

"The brush must draw by itself. This cannot happen if one does not practice constantly. But neither can it happen if one makes an effort. Similarly, in swordmanship one must not first decide upon a certain thrust and then attempt to make it, since by that time it will be too late. Decision and action must be simultaneous."

I would love to get a chance at this class! SO FUN! For me if I'm in a shlump, it's usually because I am stressed about something unrelated. I like to take a deep breath, and figure out how to simplify something. Usually what stresses me is if I have a mess somewhere. So I spend time cleaning, and getting everything in order, and then I feel that I can "art" again. It seems to clear my brain and I get inspired, or just that drive to be creative again.

I start with my phone and a coat and a walk outside... And I take pictures, loads of them. Then I clean off the mantle over the hearth... Wipe it out of photos, art, candles...and I look at the naked mantle and all those pictures and think of what I saw that makes me happy and then I know what I want to paint. Maybe a mouse, or a plant or a bird or a banner or lantern in a winter tree... Just whatever makes me smile. Thanks for sharing your art!

I just found you and your art and I love it! Your work is so cheerful and inspiring. I am an artist who seems to lost my way due to family obligations, work and home. 'Winning' your class would allow me to focus on my creative self helping me make the time for art.
My tip is if I were stuck in a rut, I would grab my dog, and take a walk without cell phone, music or thinking about what else I needed to do. Lucky to live near the beach, winter walks along the shore are amazing! There is no one on the beach and nature is as pure as it gets! The sound of waves crashing against the sand lulls you into a type of meditation where your mind flows with wonderful thoughts and ideas. I always come back home, head cleared and ready to create, discover and enjoy something new. Thank you! Mary. Marygreenstone@yahoo.com

thanks for the great giveaway Jodi. I don't fair well in the cold, I end up feeling down and unmotivated. Last year I decided to try different routines to help overcome that so I have a little box with some basic art supplies in it, ones you don't need a water bucket or palette for, and I take time each afternoon after work to sit in front of my garden window and just play, no pressure to create 'something', adding journaling about what I am grateful for and picking positive quotes. I try to look at it now as a time for nurturing and inward reflection.

Unknown said...

To motivate myself, I go through a box where I keep all of my stuff that is halfway done or is a "later" type of project. Pretty soon, I find myself involved with finishing a project and starting another. I also like your guidance in using good brushes. I have cheap brushes that I use for glue or mark making, but I also have invested in some good brushes. Thank you for offering a scholarship. What gift!

I am very new to this creative space called "ART". When I am in a slump I sit at my tiny art and craft space and I start to go through my different art supplies and I review my self made idea journals. Something about seeing and touching all those supplies motivates me to get back on track. I love to look at and try colors, the brighter the better inspires me to move forward. I don't always know how to use all the supplies I've purchase but just trying them out motivates me to try a create something bright and beautiful. Thanks for the generous offer.

I have found this to be the most effective practice for motivating myself when in a creative slump. I clear my art table. Then set out some paints, a container of water, my brushes and my journal or watercolour pad - all ready to sit down and begin at any time. walking past it several times it a day - it calls to me to sit down and just quickly draw or paint something. As I sit down I find myself hours later having fun and thinking - hey wait - I was supposed to be doing a 10 minute thing here!!!! :)

My favorite thing to do when I'm in a creative is to clean out me studio!!! Finding piles of unfinished artwork or a stash of beads, blank canvases, etc is a great way to get motivated. 90% of the time, when I'm in the 'slump of creativity' i find myself finishing a huge pile of unfinished pieces. Its both a catharsis and rewarding process!

I do one of a couple of things:
-I check out some videos on youtube
-look over some reference photos or some new image references for artists
-or get together with some other artist friends, with a canvas in hand, & we all start on something.
One of those three will usually get me motivated
