Li Li Wee said...
Zen to me is not just about being calm and at peace. It's about embracing chaos . It's about embracing the yin and yang energy.. IT'S ABOUT BEING PRESENT AND EMBRACING 'WHAT IS' AT THE CURRENT MOMENT!!

What I will benefit from the workshop?
I am hoping to overcome myself doubt and fear of creating through your style of art.

Thank you for the opportunity
Becky Collins said...
Zen for me today is different than it was just one week ago. On 9/9 I had a double mastectomy and will be laid up for quite a few weeks. So as I lay here this first week I'm clearing my mind(because it's too painful to even color) clearing my mind of all negative thoughts and feelings that come with being diagnosed with cancer.the new path I'm on has been sweet thus far because it's brought my husband and I some needed together time, while he's been my care giver he's also slowed me down. And that is where ZEN is for me these days. It's in the quiet, it's in the mind. But soon it will be on paper and it's that day that keeps me going! Thank you for giving all of us the opportunity to win a seat!! I hope to come visit you at your shop when I'm well enough.

Final Words.....

One of my favorite parts of sending out a newsletter has come to be the section "Final Words".  Sometimes the passage is random, other times it has to do with the theme of what project I'm working on,  even stories shared from a student or customer every once in a while.

Part of my plan this year is to up my game in the content I am delivering via newsletter and growing my reach of subscribers so that those that are drawn most to my work, will have the first chance on exclusive specials,  or opportunities to be a part of limited spacing classes or retreats.

Here's  sample newsletter just sent out yesterday.  Be sure to read the last passage, "Final Words".

I'm thinking in addition to blog posts, I will use some of your suggestions from my post "Creating Good Habits" as content as well to add to the newsletter in my 'final word' section plus other suggestions sprinkled throughout the  issue.  It inspires me to no end, thinking about the possibilities!

Is there anything you'd like to learn more about or be inspired with??

Have a Happy Hump Day~!!!

BTW--today is the first day of my new class, "Podtastic"!!! Class opens to the public soon, join in at any time!

It's just one of those weeks where I may have to post a couple of times a day to get you up to speed with all the juicy creativeness that has been going on over the last few weeks.   From North Carolina to South Carolina, on over to Memphis and back again to the Outer Banks, it's been a whirl wind time with so many memories and new friends 'collected' along the way,  I am truly blessed to be doing what I love each and every day.

First things first, for those of you who have been waiting (thank you for your patience)...my next online class is coming up starting Monday, May 26th-- and ongoing for 6 weeks with access as a self study thereafter for 12 months from the date you start (or class begins, whichever is longer).  This class will be held over at Dreaming in Color's Arte Village and will include a 30.00  coupon for product at the shop online.  We will be using a variety of mixed media painting and drawing supplies, most of which you probably already have.   There's still plenty of time to join and collect your supplies, I promise!!

As an added bonus, I'm giving away 2 spots to the class--one from my newsletter sign ups over at Art Is You in Memphis, that winner is "Melony Lane"  whooohooo~~  Melony,  you can contact me to receive your class info;  The second giveaway is going to be a quickie--I"ll announce the winner on Thursday morning so you have 2 1/2 days to get in on the promotion.  Simply make a comment here and tell me what you love about portrait painting or what you'd like to learn--share this post and you can get an extra entry.

To claim your extra entry, simply leave an additional comment on this post.  I am so excited to present....

Extreme Portraits
Start Date : May 26th -June 30th 2014
Class Description:
Are you looking for ways to build more depth in your portrait painting? Extreme Portraits is the newest portrait class offered by Jodi Ohl that will help you take your portrait work to the next level, even to a cutting edge extreme. In each of the lessons covering a span of six weeks, you will find easy to follow directions and content that is rich in information that you can use not just in your portrait work, but a variety of mixed media applications.
In the fall of 2012 Jodi released Painterly in Pink, an online class which focused heavily on drawing before painting the mixed media stylized portraits and now we are excited to present the much anticipated offering of Extreme Portraits, which takes many of those lessons learned in her first class to a new level of depth and character. The focus on this class will be more on paintings and building up layers through glazing and underpaintings along with some fun extra surprise lessons.

Coastal Reverie and a Giveaway, too!!!

Think about the possibilities.  If the world is your canvas, then truly you can create it as you see it. Or as you choose to see it. Once you let go of the boundaries instilled in your mind,  there are no rules as  you unleash your creative heart.

This painting is a good example of just that. I  went into my painting session with an idea and a very loose color scheme, something that I changed up a bit as I went along. What I did have was a vision though...a vision of something I had seen many years ago but with time had faded to just a blurry haze of color and shapes.

Snorkeling.  Yep..that was the inspiration behind this painting,  a dive in the Caribbean waters many moons ago, About 15 years ago at least maybe more. While I don't remember much, what I do recall is much more than blue waters floating by, it was crayon box of color , texture and MOVEMENT,  underwater. Everything is moving with every wave that goes by.  Does it look like this exactly? No. But that's okay.  The painting doesn't have to even resemble the underwater scene I was envisioning, if someone wants to believe it's a explosion of fireworks...that's okay with me too.  It's just a canvas. It's a memory. It's a feeling.  It's going to elicit something different from everyone who views it.

Our individual canvases can go from one feeling to another rather quickly, at times it just may be simple and understated like the canvas above.  Still, the colors evoke a feeling...to me, they bring me back to a cottage I once knew well by the lake,  a little store nearby full of penny candy and freeze pops and a line up of boats anchored near the shore. I imagine this board nestled in a vignette of fisherman's net and starfish, maybe sitting on top of a treasure box full of memories of a summer not too long ago.
Art does that for you. It brings you back in time.
It retells the stories before they are forgotten.
The colors chosen can further remind us of that time when....
Or the time we wish we were a part of...
Art, like life, is a medley of memories, told in bits in pieces.  But put together, you begin to see the bigger picture.

I was recently interviewed by Mo of Artful Living Group about my upcoming exhibit at their gallery:

Coastal Reverie
..and as we were talking about the show, she picked up on the fact that I seem to use a lot of houses, communities, fun coastal themes and a lot of positive words or affirmations in my work.  We talked about overcoming odds and making a better life for ourselves,  and using art to tell our stories..and it was like an aha moment for me.  Consciously, I knew what I was going to do for the show yet in a lot of ways, I have been preparing for it for years.  Bits and pieces of all my influences have found their way into each of the pieces I will be showing.  Some tell color stories, some tell stories of summer love and taking chances, others are about surviving and regenerating,  flowing with what life hands you, staying positive while living each and every day to the best of our ability
A subliminal dream.
From the shores of Lake Erie to the Coast of Carolina.  It's about where I grew up and where I have planted my roots now. It's all in there, and I hope you stop by to see it come together from June 6th-June 30th with an opening reception June 6th from 6:30 to 8:30 at Artful Living Group on Cape Fear Blvd, in Carolina Beach NC.

To celebrate my first ever solo exhibit,  I wanted to share some color inspiration with some of my favorite products from Splash of Color!!!  whoooohoooo! Fearless Faux Encaustic Work Shop Tick Tick Tick!

Don't miss out on the fun in my "Fearless Faux Encaustic Discovery" class! Students are having a blast already playing with backgrounds, learning about collage techniques, testing the waters with a variety of gel mediums....

...playing around with stamping and layering....as well as delightful  mark making!  Have you ever taken an online course before?   One of the advantages of taking an online course is that you truly can work at your own pace, if you want to 'study' at 2 in the morning you can do it! Another huge advantage of online learning is that you have the instructor's (me) attention for 6 weeks or more in most classes.....wowza.  With in person classes you have a set time and when class is over, it's over.    What about making connections with other students???  We have a great dialogue going on in our forums that even though you can't sit down and chat with your classmates, you can certainly develop a friendship and message one another, share stories, ask for feedback, and most of all encourage each other to create!
...in addition to all the wonderful benefits I just mentioned, you also get PDF files that walk you through the steps and in my class, the students are getting a free collage sheet of images of mine to use.    Not bad for over 3 hours worth of videos, 6 weeks plus of teacher/student interaction,  wonderful creative connections made and most of all LOTS of fun without the hassle or expense of leaving home.  .  With that said, going to in person classes is a wonderful experience as well....but it not be accessible to many due to cost or distance.      Don't delay,  class registration is only open until July 30th, 2011!!!  Class cost is $65.00.  Come join me at Fearless Faux Encaustic Discovery!
